From the moment we are born, society starts to shape our path with a series of expectations. We are subtly and sometimes overtly told what a successful life looks like: getting a prestigious job :P settling down by a certain age, and achieving a specific milestone.
What happens when these expectations don’t align with with who we are ?
What if, in the pursuit of fulfilling societal norms. we lose sight of our true selves ??
And once again, I would say, don't let that happen—create your dream life. Read about how I created mine.
Understanding the Root of Expectations
Society’s expectations come from many places - our families, cultural norms, education systems and even from media. Often, these are grounded in good intentions but also based on an outdated beliefs that don’t apply to everyone.
For example, the expectation to live with parents in India until you get married can often overlook an individual's desires, passions, and circumstances. Learn more about why moving out of a parent's home is crucial for personal growth.
The Cost of Conformity
Living up to society’s standards can come at a steep cost. When we strive to meet expectations that don’t resonate with us, we often sacrifice our mental well-being, creativity, and ultimately our happiness. Imagine someone who spent years in a job they hate, or in a relationship that doesn’t serve them, just because it “its the right thing to do”. Over time, these choices can lead to burnout resentment, and a sense of loss over a life that could have been different.
In my case, I used Mumbai, one of the corporate paradises of India, to make way for my Himalayan adventure. If you want to know how, read this piece here.
Redefining Success on Your Terms
True success isn’t about ticking off boxes on a societal checklist; it’s about finding what makes you feel alive. It’s time to refine what happiness and success mean to you.
This could be choosing a less conventional career, prioritizing travel over homeownership, or even deciding not to get married. Remember that the road less traveled is still a road—and it’s yours to explore.

How to Break Free from Society’s Expectations

And yet again, I will say: create a life you don’t need to escape from. Read more about how you can avoid getting stuck in the modern life rut.
Finding Your Tribe
No one should walk this path alone. Seek out people who share your authentic self and share your values. Whether its an online community, a group of close friends, or a mentor, having a tribe encourages to be yourself can be transformative. They serve as a reminder, life could be lived differently.
I found my tribe in Rishikesh in the our journey of connecting the world to the Divine.
The reel below is from one of the philanthropic Kirtan events my best friend and I hosted in Rishikesh.
